How do I Know which way to go?

Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord; point out the right road for me to follow.  Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. Psalm 25:4-5 NLT

Pay attention and grow wise, for I am giving you good guidance. Don't turn away from my teaching. Proverbs 4:1-2 NLT. I will teach you wisdom's ways and lead you in straight paths. If you live a life guided by wisdom, you won't limp or stumble as you run. Proverbs 4:11-12 NLT

Have you ever come to a fork in the road? Maybe you were enjoying a nice leisurely drive until that point but now a decision must be made. Do you turn right or left? Do you turn back? Sometimes, you may even find yourself literally "paralyzed" and thus unable to make a decision.

We are all prone to find ourselves in a similar predicament sooner or later. Do I take the job or not? Do I leave the job or not? Should I go here or buy that? Sometimes we're faced with several options, and we don't know which way to go. In Psalms 25, David asked God for guidance. Perhaps he remembered when, as a shepherd boy, he had to show the right path to his sheep who were wandering away. Just as he knew which path would lead to safety for his sheep, God knew the path that would lead to everlasting life. Just as those sheep that looked to him for direction were in
the least danger, so David knew he needed to look to God for direction.

The Lord is our shepherd (Psalms 23) and we must let him lead us. He knows the right direction. We are His sheep. When we think of ourselves as sheep we must think of our selves as being in a very meek and humble condition. We must realize that we are prone to attacks from dangers outside. We must also accept the fact that left to our selves we might even wander off into dangerous ground without even knowing. We need God's guidance to stay on the right path (Jer 10:23)!  He gives us free will to decide and act but commands that we trust Him with our lives (Rom 12:1-2).  Can we do that? We must trust his good intentions towards us as evidenced by His repeated actions on our behalf (John 3:16). We must pray and seek His will through His Word.

Finally, we must learn to ask ourselves, "Which way does God want me to go? "Which way will bring me closer to Him?" "Will this practice, object, habit, or service help or hamper my walk?" When we can answer those questions, we will know which way to go. His way! Once we know the answer we must have enough faith and courage to pursue the things that draw/keep us nearer to His path. Knowing is one issue, going is quite another. We'll save that for another minute!
