The Minister's Minute: The Opportunity to Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household
of faith. Gal. 6:10 (NKJV).
Having his children "do good" is very important
to God. There are scriptures besides the one listed above that urge the Christian to do good works. The Hebrew
writer urged that we "not forget to do good and to share" (Heb 13:16). There are other examples that drive
home the same point. Both God the Father (John 3:16) and His Son Jesus (Matt 9:35-38) were moved by compassion to "do
good" to mankind. Doing good is not the point that I want to highlight in the Galatians text.
I would like to take a minute to talk about the word "opportunity". Opportunity, according to Strong's
comes from a word (kairos) in the Greek that refers to "due time", the right time", the "decisive epoch
waited for" and " a fixed and definite time, when things are most brought to crisis". Taken together,
we are to do good to all men when it is due time. We are to do good when it is the right time at the epoch (origin)
of the crisis or occasion. We are to do good in due time! Today, we are at one of those times. We are at
the origin of a crisis. The headlines are shocking, the images are graphic, and the number of deaths
and potential deaths are staggering. The tragedy in Haiti has rightfully captured the attention
of the world's media and much of the overall population at large. Buildings have been destroyed killing many and
trapping others beneath the rubble. Power is lost and food and water are in short supply. One report said that
people were almost "fighting for water". The International Red Cross has indicated that as many as 50,000
people may have already died in the Tuesday's earthquake. That total could double by the time all is said and done according
to Haiti's President. We will have a special collection very soon and (or) list the contact information
of organizations and congregations that have taken the lead on getting aid to the people of Haiti so we can be sure to do
our best to "do good" to the people of Haiti.
